Fixing the Confidence Gap!
“If you hear a voice within you say, ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” — Vincent Van Gogh
A few months ago, I was catching up with a friend over coffee.
She had just quit her job to go freelance as a designer — the kind of bold leap most people only talk about but never make.
She had clients lining up.
Her work was brilliant.
Her instincts were sharp.
But between sips of her flat white, she said something that stuck with me:
“I feel like I’m playing entrepreneur. Like I need someone to tell me it’s okay to do this.”
That hit me hard.
Because I’ve been there too — and I’m guessing you have as well.
The Invisible Confidence Gap
Over the last year, I’ve received dozens of DMs and emails with a familiar tune:
“I want to start a blog, but I don’t think I’m expert enough.”
“I have this idea for a course, but I’m not ready.”
“I’ve been recording podcast episodes… but I’m not confident anyone will care.”
I recognize the hesitation.
Before I launched my first podcast, I recorded 14 full-length episodes — and deleted every single one.
They weren’t terrible. But I convinced myself they weren’t good enough.
So I waited.
Not because I lacked skills.
But because I thought I needed permission.
The Real Reason You’re Stuck
Here’s something that took me too long to understand:
Confidence is not something you have before you start. It’s something you build because you started.
According to research published in the International Journal of Behavioral Science, around 70% of people experience imposter syndrome, regardless of their accomplishments.
And another stat worth sitting with:
A Hewlett Packard internal report once found that men apply for jobs when they meet 60% of the qualifications. Women wait until they meet 100%.
That’s not a capability gap.
That’s a confidence gap.
What is a confidence gap?
A confidence gap refers to the space between your ability and your belief in that ability — where people delay taking action because they feel unready or unqualified. It’s often driven by imposter syndrome and fear of judgment, not lack of skill. Confidence isn’t a prerequisite to starting — it’s the result of starting.
Nobody Is Coming to Tap You on the Shoulder – Overcoming fear of starting!
You might be waiting for a mentor to reach out and say, “You’ve got what it takes.”
Or a course instructor to give you a gold star and whisper, “Now you’re ready.”
Maybe you’re waiting for the voice in your head to change — for the fear to quiet down and the confidence to finally show up.
I get it.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that credibility is something granted to us.
That someone else — a boss, a client, an expert, a panel — will tell us when we’re allowed to begin.
But here’s the truth:
That moment of permission?
It doesn’t exist.
Nobody is coming to tap you on the shoulder and say, “Yes, now’s the time. Go.”
That’s not how it works in real life.
It works like this:
- You decide to move.
- Even with the doubt.
- Even with the imposter syndrome whispering you’re not ready.
And then, something strange happens — The world begins to respond.
Opportunities you couldn’t see before start appearing.
People start paying attention.
Not because you were finally “qualified,” but because you finally showed up.
Your progress doesn’t come from being discovered.
It comes from choosing to be visible.
And the more you wait for a clear sign, the more time you spend standing still in the dark, hoping someone else will flip the switch.
But you’ve always had the light.
You just have to turn it on.
How to Start before you’re Ready!
You don’t need to overhaul your life.
You just need to take one small step to build self-confidence through action.
Here are five easy, low-barrier ways to take action today:
1. Remember What You’ve Already Done
Think back to one moment where you did something before you were ready. Write it down.
Proof is powerful — especially when it’s your own.
2. Do the Minimum Viable Version
Want to launch a podcast? Record a 3-minute voice memo on your phone.
Starting a blog? Write a short note on LinkedIn or Medium.
Action doesn’t have to be grand to be meaningful.
3. Borrow Confidence Until Yours Kicks In
Find someone who believes in you — and let their voice be louder than your self-doubt, for now.
You’ll catch up to their belief sooner than you think.
4. Make a Micro-Commitment Public
Tell one person what you’re doing.
Send a text. Make a story post.
Accountability creates gravity.
5. Redefine What “Ready” Looks Like
Feeling unsure doesn’t mean you’re unprepared.
It means you’re human.
The key is to move while you’re unsure — not after.
A Final Thought – Overcoming fear of starting!
When Van Gogh said, “If you hear a voice within you say, ‘you cannot paint,’ then by all means paint”, he wasn’t giving artistic advice.
He was giving you a playbook.
Do the thing that scares you — while the doubt is loud. Because that’s how you silence it.
You’re not here to ask for permission. You’re here to give yourself a shot.
This Week’s Action Step – How to start before you’re ready!
Take that idea you’ve been sitting on — the one you keep pushing to “next week.”
Now write the first sentence.
Send the first email.
Create the outline.
Record the intro.
It doesn’t have to be finished.
It just has to begin.
Quote to Carry With You
“The way to develop self-confidence is to do the thing you fear.” — William Jennings Bryan

Frequently Asked Questions:
Why do I feel like I need permission to start something new?
Many people wait for external validation before starting — from mentors, employers, or peers. This is often due to imposter syndrome or fear of judgment. But in reality, confidence builds only after taking action, not before.
How do I start when I don’t feel ready?
Begin with a small, low-pressure action: write the first sentence, record a short voice memo, or tell someone your goal. These tiny steps build momentum and quiet self-doubt over time.
What’s the best way to overcome imposter syndrome?
The best way to overcome imposter syndrome is to take consistent, visible action. Keep a “proof list” of small wins and revisit it when doubt creeps in. Confidence is built through doing, not thinking.
Can confidence be learned?
Yes. Confidence is not a fixed trait — it’s a muscle. The more you take action in the face of fear, the more it grows. It’s a learn-by-doing process.
Why is confidence important for creators and entrepreneurs?
Confidence helps you start, stay consistent, and speak up about your ideas. Without it, you may delay action, shrink your visibility, or abandon valuable work before it has a chance to grow.
