Overcoming Impostor Syndrome!
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
A few years ago, I sat across from a boardroom table, pitching a strategy I had worked on for weeks.
It was solid.
Data-backed.
Creative.
And still… as I spoke, a voice in my head whispered, “You’re not the smartest person in the room. Someone’s going to call you out.”
My palms were sweating, and I couldn’t focus.
That wasn’t nerves. That was impostor syndrome — the persistent fear that you’re a fraud, even when you’ve earned your place at the table.
If you’ve felt that before — in a meeting, on a podcast, during a launch, or just staring at your own content thinking “Who am I to talk about this?” — you’re not alone.
In fact, you’re in great company.
What Is Impostor Syndrome, Really?
Impostor syndrome isn’t just self-doubt.
It’s a deep-rooted fear of being exposed as someone who isn’t as capable as others think you are.
And here’s the kicker: it’s most common in high achievers.
People who care deeply.
People like you.
But when left unchecked, it keeps you from showing up.
It steals your confidence, delays your launches, shrinks your voice, and makes you second-guess your own value.
That’s why Eleanor Roosevelt’s words ring so true:
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
You can’t control the doubts in others’ minds.
But you can stop giving them permission to live rent-free in yours.
First, Let’s Debunk the Myth
The biggest lie impostor syndrome tells you?
That “confident” people don’t feel it.
But here’s the truth: even Maya Angelou said…
“Each time I write a book, I think — this is the one they’re going to find out about me.”
You don’t grow out of impostor syndrome by achieving more.
You grow beyond it by choosing to believe in yourself despite the doubt.
5 Ways to Overcome Impostor Syndrome and Show Up Anyway
Let’s make this practical.
Here are 5 mindset shifts and actions that will help you show up with confidence, even when the inner critic gets loud:
1. Name It When It Shows Up
Awareness is power.
When you feel that wave of self-doubt, call it what it is: “Oh hey, impostor syndrome. I see you.”
That simple acknowledgment gives you distance.
You are not your thoughts — you are the observer of them.
2. Document the Wins (Big + Small)
Keep a “proof file.”
Every time someone thanks you, praises your work, or you achieve something — screenshot it, write it down, save it.
On low-confidence days, open that file.
Remind yourself of the evidence.
Confidence isn’t a personality trait — it’s a pattern of self-trust, built over time.
3. Act Before You Feel Ready
You’ll never feel 100% ready.
But confidence doesn’t come before the action.
It comes because of it.
Post the video.
Start the podcast.
Pitch the client.
Share the idea.
Let your courage lead. Confidence will follow.
4. Get Around People Who Reflect Your Value
You don’t need cheerleaders who hype you blindly.
You need mirrors who see your real brilliance — even when you forget it.
Be intentional about who you let into your headspace.
Their voices often become your internal ones.
5. Separate Identity from Outcome
You are not your performance.
If a piece of content flops, if a launch underwhelms, if a pitch goes flat — it doesn’t mean you are unworthy.
Learn. Adjust. Move forward.
Confidence grows when you detach your worth from your results.
A Quick Habit to Practice Daily
Here’s one simple 60-second habit to rewire your confidence:
At the end of each day, ask yourself:
“Where did I show up today — even when it was hard?”
Write it down.
Do it for 30 days.
Watch your self-perception shift.
Final Thought
Impostor syndrome may never fully disappear.
But it doesn’t have to define you.
You get to choose whose voice gets the mic — the voice of doubt, or the voice of deliberate belief in yourself.
Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote isn’t just a nice idea.
It’s a daily practice.
You don’t have to feel confident to be worthy.
You already are.
You just need to stop handing over the consent slip.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What if impostor syndrome never completely goes away?
You’re not alone. Even the most successful people experience it. The goal isn’t to eliminate it completely but to stop letting it control your actions. Awareness, self-compassion, and consistent small wins help you move forward even when doubt shows up.
How do I know the difference between being humble and having impostor syndrome?
Humility is knowing you still have room to grow.
Impostor syndrome is believing you don’t deserve to be where you are.
The key is in the intention: humility invites growth, impostor syndrome breeds fear.
I’m just starting out. Is it normal to feel like I don’t belong?
Totally normal, and often a sign that you’re stretching into new territory. Every expert was once a beginner. What matters most is showing up consistently, not feeling fully qualified before you start.
Can I still show up confidently even if I don’t have “all the answers”?
Absolutely. Confidence isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about trusting your ability to figure things out and add value as you grow. Curiosity and honesty often go further than certainty.
