Creating an environment for Success!
“I can’t think myself out of a bad environment any more than I can meditate my way out of a burning house.” – Dr. Susan David
We love to romanticize the idea of willpower.
That internal fire that supposedly separates the successful from the stuck.
The discipline to say no to distractions. The grit to wake up at 5 AM.
The power to push through the resistance and “just do it.”
But here’s the hard truth most people don’t want to hear:
Willpower is a terrible strategy.
And the more you rely on the willpower myth, the more likely you are to fail.
Because willpower is finite. It runs out.
It gets weaker as the day goes on. It’s easily depleted by stress, decision fatigue, and you guessed it – Your environment.
I didn’t always know this. In fact, I learned it the hard way.
The Corporate Trap: Burnout Disguised as Willpower
Back when I was still in my corporate leadership role, my calendar was packed.
Meetings back-to-back. People pulling me in a dozen directions.
And I was trying to build a side hustle at night, launching my podcast and writing content on the weekends.
I told myself I just needed to push harder. Use my willpower. Hustle more.
Every morning I’d set ambitious goals. But by 8 PM, drained and distracted, I’d fall into the same loop:
Scroll Instagram. Watch “just one” episode of something.
Then spiral into guilt about wasting time.
Sound familiar?
This cycle repeated for months.
And it wasn’t until I stumbled upon BJ Fogg’s work in “Tiny Habits” that the lightbulb finally switched on:
“Design beats discipline. You change best by feeling good, not by feeling bad.”
That hit me like a truck.
I wasn’t failing because I lacked willpower.
I was failing because I was relying on it at all. I had no self-discipline!
The Reality: Willpower Is Not Your Superpower, your Environment Is!
Think about it.
You never have to “force yourself” to brush your teeth.
Or “summon willpower” to put your shoes by the door.
Why?
Because those actions are cued by your environment.
The toothbrush is right there. The shoes are where they should be.
The friction is low. The decision is easy.
Now compare that to trying to write content with Instagram open in another tab.
Or starting your day with your phone on your pillow.
We like to think we’re making conscious choices.
But in truth, we’re reacting to our surroundings.
So What Does a Success-Oriented Environment Actually Look Like?
Success is all about a habit design.
It is about building self-discipline and building an environment that guides you in being disciplined.
Here’s what I started doing and what I still do to this day.
Each of these changes helped me go from stuck and scattered to consistently shipping content, building my podcast, and growing my affiliate income.
1. Control Your Inputs
I used to follow 300+ people on Twitter and subscribe to every newsletter with a shiny headline.
You know what that gave me?
A brain full of noise.
So I trimmed it down. Ruthlessly.
I unsubscribed from anything that didn’t directly help my goals.
I unfollowed people who made me feel like I was behind.
I kept my digital world clean.
Environment tip: Your brain is not a storage unit. Curate what gets in.
2. Make Productive Actions Obvious and Easy
I placed my podcast mic on my desk.
I kept my content ideas journal open on my desktop.
I bookmarked Google Docs so I could jump straight into writing.
No more 10 clicks to get started.
No more friction.
I took a page from James Clear’s “Atomic Habits”: Make it easy. Make it obvious.
3. Design Your Defaults – the power of habit design!
On Sunday nights, I plan the week.
I batch content creation for specific time blocks.
I use tools like Notion to keep everything visible.
And I removed all social media apps from my phone during work hours.
You don’t rise to the occasion. You default to your system.
Design a better default.
Real Talk: You’re Not Lazy. You’re Surrounded by Traps.
One of the most liberating realizations I’ve had on this journey?
I’m not broken. Neither are you.
You’re not “bad at self-discipline.”
You’re not a procrastinator “by nature.”
You’re just trying to do focused work in an environment designed for distraction.
We live in a world optimized to steal your attention.
So trying to rely on sheer willpower to stay productive is like trying to swim upstream and that too blindfolded.
This is why environment beats effort.
And why discipline isn’t about pushing harder, but about making good choices the easy choices.
3 Simple Environment Tweaks You Can Make Today
These are embarrassingly simple, but they work.
1. Turn Off Non-Essential Notifications
You don’t need to know every time someone likes your tweet.
2. Create a “Distraction-Free” Workspace
One tab. One task. One goal.
Use apps like Freedom or Cold Turkey if needed.
3. Set Triggers for Productive Habits
Want to write in the morning? Leave your laptop open to your draft.
Want to record your podcast? Leave your script ready.
Make your environment your to-do list.
Books That Will Help You Go Deeper
If you want to turn this idea into a way of life, start with these:
- “Atomic Habits” by James Clear – A must-read on habit design and environment shaping.
- “Tiny Habits” by BJ Fogg – Learn why celebration beats discipline and how to start small.
- “The Power of Full Engagement” by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz – Understand energy management vs. time management.
Final Thought: Design for the Life You Want
If you’re trying to build something meaningful, a business, a podcast, a content brand then you need more than motivation.
You need a system.
You need an environment that makes success inevitable.
Because when the environment supports you, you don’t have to fight yourself.
You just flow.
And that’s when things finally click.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What exactly is the Escape Plan Blueprint?
It’s a self-paced, step-by-step roadmap that helps you go from trading time for money to building a scalable, content-driven side hustle. You’ll learn how to find your niche, create content that converts, grow an audience, and monetize in a way that fits your life, not someone else’s hustle playbook.
Is this for me if I’m still working a full-time job?
Yes! The Blueprint was specifically designed for people with a 9-5 who want to escape the grind without burning out. You’ll learn how to use small pockets of time more strategically and build real momentum, even with a demanding job.
I’ve taken other online courses before and didn’t finish them. How is this different?
This isn’t a pile of videos and vague advice. It’s a practical, action-first system with bite-sized lessons, clear next steps, and built-in accountability prompts. You’ll make progress in real time, without getting overwhelmed.
How long will it take me to start seeing results?
You’ll start building your foundation in Week 1. Most students see their first results—like publishing content consistently, attracting an audience, or landing their first small income stream, within the first 30-60 days, depending on your effort and time.
Do I need to be tech-savvy or have a big audience to get results?
Not at all. The Blueprint focuses on building from zero, whether you have 10 followers or no online presence at all. I walk you through simple tools, lean systems, and beginner-friendly platforms that won’t require a tech degree or fancy gear.
What if I don’t know what niche or business idea I want to pursue yet?
That’s actually one of the most common starting points. The Blueprint includes exercises and prompts to help you uncover your sweet spot, what you’re good at, what people want, and what can make money online. No clarity? No problem. We build that first.
