How to find your niche!

“You don’t find your passion. You build it.” — Cal Newport

Back when I was still working in corporate, I used to carry a notebook.

Not a digital one — a real, dog-eared notebook with scribbles, ideas, and the occasional coffee stain.

Inside it?

Half-baked startup concepts, book titles I’d never write, course outlines, podcast episode ideas, and everything in between.

At one point, I remember flipping through it and asking myself — “Why do I have so many ideas but no real direction?”

I was multi-passionate. And I was stuck.

If that sounds like you, you’re not alone.

You’ve got a hundred content ideas, several skills, and enough energy to run a solo content business… but no clear niche.

The good news? You don’t need months to figure it out.

In fact, you can find your niche in just 48 hours — and I’ll walk you through exactly how to do it.

Oh, and I’ve created a simple niche worksheet to go along with this. You can grab it here: Download Worksheet

Let’s go.

Why Finding a Niche Feels So Overwhelming

Let me guess — you’ve been circling around this whole “niche” thing for weeks, maybe even months.

You open up a blank doc, jot down a few ideas, and then… delete them all.

You’re worried that picking the wrong niche means you’re stuck with it forever — like it’s some kind of life sentence.

But I want you to take a deep breath with me here.

Your niche?

It’s not a tattoo.

You’re not etching it onto your skin for life.

It’s more like a compass — something to guide your energy, help you show up consistently, and attract the right people into your world.

That’s it.

I want you to know this because I’ve been where you are.

When I started creating content, I didn’t have a master plan.

No five-year strategy.

No personal brand vision.

Definitely no clarity.

I just began with affiliate product reviews because it felt like a way to get started.

Later, I started talking about productivity, because I needed those systems for myself.

Then, as my audience grew and my interests deepened, I naturally evolved into talking about content marketing and podcasting.

It wasn’t linear.

It wasn’t perfect.

But every step gave me a clearer view of the next.

And here’s what I’ve learned:

You don’t find your niche by thinking. You find it by doing.

So don’t let the pressure of permanence stop you from moving forward.

Start with what feels right today and let your journey shape the rest.

The 3-Part Formula to Find Your Niche (In Just 48 Hours)

If you want clarity without the chaos, use this simple framework:

Skills + Passion + Market Need = Viable Niche

Let me break it down for you.

1. List Your Skills

These are things you can do well — even if no official training or certificate backs them up.

Think about this:

What do people naturally come to you for help with?

Maybe you’re the person your colleagues ask when Excel breaks.

Maybe friends ask for your advice on resumes, organizing events, or setting up a budget.

It might not seem like a big deal — but those are valuable clues.

What do you do at work or in daily life that others find difficult, but you enjoy or find surprisingly easy?

Also, reflect on times when you’ve taught or guided someone, even casually.

Did you help a friend set up a podcast?

Did you walk your sibling through a job application process?

That’s teaching.

The goal here is to recognize what comes naturally to you — because that’s often where your niche starts to take shape.

Look for repeated patterns. These aren’t random.

If you find yourself simplifying complex topics, coaching others through their confusion, or turning rough ideas into clean visuals — that’s gold.

You don’t need permission to claim those skills.

You just need the self-awareness to notice them and the courage to start building with them.

It’ll help you uncover what he calls your “Zone of Genius” — not just what you’re good at, but what you’re meant to do.

2. Identify Your Passions

This one’s about energy — the kind that doesn’t need a deadline to show up.

Ask yourself this:

What are the topics that naturally draw your attention, even when no one’s watching?

What kind of content do you consume out of pure interest — not obligation?

Think about the conversations you could get lost in for hours.

What would you gladly research, talk about, or teach — even if it didn’t earn you a single rupee right away?

That’s the foundation of passion. It’s not always loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s quiet. Subtle. A pull, not a push.

Now here’s the mindset shift most people miss:

You don’t need to be an expert.

You don’t need followers.

You don’t even need full clarity.

You just need curiosity.

Because passion isn’t something you find fully formed — it’s something you develop.

When I started podcasting, I had no background in media or audio engineering.

What I had was curiosity. I loved meaningful conversations. I enjoyed storytelling. That was enough to get started.

And over time, the passion grew.

The more I practiced, the more I cared.

The more I shared, the more I learned.

So if there’s a topic that keeps showing up in your thoughts — don’t ignore it.

Follow it. Explore it. Test it.

Your niche doesn’t need to be built on lifelong obsession.

It just needs to start with enough energy to keep going when no one’s clapping yet.

3. Validate Market Need

This is the step where most creators get stuck — or skip altogether.

You’ve got an idea that feels exciting. Maybe it even aligns with your skills and passions.

But here’s the tough love truth: Just because you love it doesn’t mean others will pay attention to it.

You need to find out if your idea lives in a vacuum or if it actually solves a real-world problem people are searching for.

So how do you do that without spending weeks overthinking?

Here are a few fast and simple ways:

  • Google Trends: Search your niche keyword. If the trend is going up or stable, that’s a good sign. If it’s declining, reconsider or niche down further.
  • Reddit: Reddit is a goldmine of raw, unfiltered audience insight. Head into relevant subreddits and look for the types of questions being asked. What are people struggling with? Are there common frustrations or repeated topics?
  • YouTube: Type in your niche and browse the top videos. Are they getting good views and active comments? More importantly, are people engaging with the content and asking follow-up questions?

Bonus tip: Pay attention to what’s missing.

If you see problems that people are talking about but few creators are addressing in depth, that’s your gap. That’s your opportunity.

And don’t worry — you don’t have to validate with perfect certainty. You just need enough confidence to move forward.

Your goal here is simple:

Make sure your content has a hungry audience — not just a hopeful creator.

The Real Reason to Choose a Niche Now (Not Later)

Every day you wait to “figure things out,” you’re delaying feedback.

And feedback is the fastest way to grow.

Picking a niche isn’t a marriage — it’s a minimum viable commitment.

It helps you:

  • Build momentum
  • Attract the right audience
  • Position yourself as a go-to creator

And yes, you can pivot later.

Many successful creators did.

So, What Happens After You Find Your Niche?

Once you land on a niche, your job is to go all in — for 90 days.

Create content.

Engage your audience.

See what sticks.

Then reassess.

You’re not committing to it forever.

You’re just collecting data — from real humans who respond to real content.

That’s how personal branding grows.

That’s how content niches become content businesses.

And that’s how you get unstuck.

“Clarity comes from action, not thought.” — Marie Forleo
